If you choose to fly the friendly skies to get to the destination of your vacation, book well enough in advance for cheaper tickets. You might be able to find cheaper flights up to a month prior to your vacation. Booking flights during the middle of the week versus the weekend is definitely cheaper. But don’t wait too close to your vacation date or you will find sky high pricings (pun intended). Find flight deals at TripAdvisor and other sites like Kayak.com and Priceline.com. Some of these sites show you vacation package deals. But mainly, they show you pricing for multiple airlines versus looking at airlines individually. Although, sometimes you might be able to find cheaper flights by looking at specific airlines. Clear as mud? Unfortunately, there is no rhyme or reason to flight pricing but the more experience you have with flying and knowing how much certain destinations usually cost, the more you begin to get a sense of if you need to research sites individually to find the best prices.
What to Expect At the Airport
Arrive at the airport at least 1 1/2 – 2 hours in advance Some airports suggest up to 4 hours. (which is a mini vacation within itself). This may depend
on busy airports that have a lot of flight traffic coming and going to a multitude of destinations. And yes it stinks, but unforeseen delays could arise costing you a missed flight. Then you risk flying standby or waiting for a later flight. The longer you wait for a new
flight the more your vacation is cut just that much shorter. And that’s if you’re lucky. Depending on where you’re headed to on your vacation you might not be able to catch another flight on the very same day you were supposed to leave out. When you arrive at the airport check to see if your flight has been delayed or is on time. There should be multiple screens available for viewing. Then you should head to the sign that says something like “Ticketing” or ”Check In” and go to the counter of your specific airline. Here you will get your boarding pass and check in any luggage you may have. Once you’ve gone through that hoop then head off to everyone’s favorite, security (just testing your sarcasm meter).
Ready, Set & Go!
Once you’ve been ushered through security, you’re one step closer to being on your vacation. Check the departure/arrival screen once again no matter how redundant.
You never know if you’re flight gate has changed between the time you arrived to the airport to the time you’re through security. It happens. After that, follow the signs and head to your gate. Once you arrive to your gate do a third check and make sure your destination reads on the screen at the counter. Can’t emphasis enough to make sure you’re at the right gate! I’m pretty sure you don’t want to spend your vacation in the airport. Now that you have succeeded in getting safely to your gate just sit back, let out a sigh of relief and start making a mental checklist of all the fun things you’re going to do on your vacation. Aaaah!
